The lion was standing underneath a tree on a very sunny day. The few rays of sunlight hit him on exactly the right spots. The brightness of the light made the shadows practically black on the film, giving this effect.

Arthur - I am amazed that this image, posted on Friday, and chosen as an Editors Pick yesterday, has not yet received a single comment or critique. So, here I go: I love the mystery evoked by the outstanding lighting. This image certainly merits the Editors Pick. I am honored to have one of mine in the its company.
