Approach
by Tony Kuyper
I had a Coyote Buttes permit for early April and had planned to explore some other areas, but ended up sort of hanging around The Wave longer than I expected. It was nice weather, and when I arrived quite early in the morning, the light just seemed to be "happening" like I don't remember it on previous visits. There were areas of glow, and semi-glow, and shade that seemed to work well together for the type of pictures I like to take.
I've resisted posting images from The Wave because part of me feels they add little to the considerable number already taken here. Another part, however, simply finds incredible joy in seeing shapes and textures and light like this, and finding a way to participate in what's happening. The light seemed to be different this time, though I can't say how, so I lingered, found some new pictures (at least for me) and had a wonderful time.
Your thoughts and recommendations would be appreciated. I'll offer an apology up front if I've duplicated someone else's image. Please feel free to post a link to your version if I have.

55 commentsI love this Tony .. excellent work
I'd be tempted to clone out that slightly distracting dark area in the top slightly left.
Excellent.
Can't wait to see this place with my own eyes. A treat.

I really like the layered comp, adds great depth to a small scene. Beautiful yet accurate rendition of the colors and tones from this area. Wonderful image!

I have absolutely no problem with new takes on icons, especially with quality work. The comp is very strong here. Well done.
I saw your thumbnail here, and immediately got excited. Upon viewing the full size image, you did not let us down. This composition displaying the different levels of light hitting the opposing angles is simply beautiful!
To me the PP on this photo looks a bit more natural than some of your other work. I like how you have controlled the contrast of the bright background and the darker foreground. But I’m sure this is child’s play for you.

Im finding it really hard to critique your work, thats good thing though. This almost looks like a water slide of sandstone. The different slopes all stand out. Nicely done
Fabulous composition with the crossing lines and great range of light. I think the light you experienced that morning would be what I call Organic Light. It is somehow different, you can't put your finger on it, but its different, and I like how you explained it, it was happening.
Congrats on the EP!
