Never Again Bobolink
by Sharon Hallowell
I spent about a half hour watching a pair of harriers in a huge grass field. I was aware of the 3 "blackbirds" frolicking in the grasses about 80 yards down from where I was, but didn't pay much attention to them...just "blackbirds" after all. When I was leaving I came upon them and realized they weren't blackbirds at all, but bobolinks! I was so excited...I had spent a lot of my time last summer trying to find one that wouldn't fly away when I got within 100 yards of him. Now I had a chance at 3 of them!
Anyway, Never Again will I just ignore the bb's down the field!!
This is the first of 2 I will post here. I like this with the bird smaller in the frame and the light colors of the grasses in the bg and the twigs. I do wish the one twig wasn't in front of the bird, but I think this still works and I wonder what you all will think?

14 commentsTwo years ago a large field of prairie grasses near me was filled with Bobolinks, there must have been a hundred pair of them. That was the year the harriers nested there, and by season end they hide pretty much wiped out the entire bobolink population. Although there are still a few there, they have not recovered to those numbers. I assume its part of the natural cycle...
