Barred Owls

Not sure if the parent is the female or not, but this was shot on Mother's Day morning so it would be fitting if it were the mother. Barred owls continue to feed their young long after leaving the nest. This exchange of food between parent and fledgling was over in seconds and I was lucky enough to get one frame with both birds in the plane of focus. This is about 70% of the original frame. It is a bit tight, but I cropped for composition to eliminate the surrounding out of focus branches. The clear view of the birds was through a narrow gap in the trees.

Here's a version with a couple of bg branches removed. Which do you prefer?

Wow, great interaction between Mom and fledge. The branches don't bother me much, they show the habitat very nicely. :toast:

This is excellent David. I love the interaction, with the youngster seeming to want to claw its way up the branch to the food. It is a bit tight on the left but I think you made the right cropping decision. My vote is strongly for the original, uncloned version. I had to look for the branches that you said you cloned out after I read your comment - they didn't bother me in the least.

David, I like the colors of the first post (the repost seems a bit washed out on my monitor), but I prefer the background of the second post. It's an amazing composition. The birds are beautifully positioned and the detail in the bug is fantastic!

Fantastic interaction and perfect timing - I'd be thrilled to have seen this, let alone photographed it. I prefer the original file - those branches don't distract me at all

wow, David--awesome shot. great prey item and interaction, nice sharpness on both birds. Interesting view of the birds' bills--I never think of owls as having large bills, but they sure do here. I'm definitely for the original--those branches do not detract at all and are a part of the scene. :toast:

Great feeding behavior David! The bug is quite a find, for you and them. I like the original version, you want the added complexity in this case I feel. I want to see one of these in the wild some day...

Wonderful catch- great interaction.
I prefer the second version, a bit cloned out to focus attention on the birds.

David,

I prefer the uncloned version but then I almost always prefer my own images without any "cleaning up".

I love the intimate interaction you have in this photo.

Excellent behavioral shot David, love the timing on this wonderful interaction.
I don't think removing a few twigs really matters here, the content carries the day :toast: :toast:
