Ice Abstract

Here is another ice abstract from Spray Lake in Kananaskis Country, Alberta. I posted one a while ago from the same shoot but overlooked this one. This piece of ice glowed from about 100 meters away! This particular section is about two feet across, just to give you an idea of scale. I had to back up and contort myself into a strange position and shoot at 200mm to get a good vantage point of this section. At regular size this one came in at something like 450k so I had to make it a little smaller. I have attached a larger version as well, however I had trouble getting the sharpening right on it. Thanks for looking!

Very interesting abstract...I see a hammer head shark traped in there! Didn't know they had them in Spray Lake  Well seen and captured.

The rough vertical streaks against the more sensual horizontal curves creates an interesting contrast. I love the blue tones as well.

I'm not even sure what i'm looking at--but its a real cool abstract! If you can tone down those two bright spots i think it would even be better. Sweet shot!

Wow, thanks guys... Stan, I noticed those spots as well and will likely fix them up later. I kept looking at this image in my unprocessed images and could not figure out a way to crop it to make it a really great comp. After a while I decided that the contrast in textures and piercing blue where irresistible and had to post it!

When I first saw the thumbnail, I thought it was taken in an ice cave. Fantastic abstract Wayne! Love the tones and the mix of strong vertical lines and soft curves.

Yeah, sometimes nature isn't interested in "composition". I'm glad you gave in an posted this one even if you didn't feel like you could find the right crop. It's an utterly fascinating photo, and like Eva said, it's difficult to imagine how lake ice could take on these shapes I associate with an entirely different context.

Also, I bet 90% of viewers are fooled by optical illusions in the image. At first, even I was, and that's always fun.

This is one where the larger view is worth it. I love natural abstracts. Crop looks fine to me.

What a great abstract! Those nice curves are so nice amidst the icicles, and what tones! The light and shadows almost seem like this was taken underwater.

Wayne,

This is fantastic. I'm with Anthony on the dancing whales impression. :-) The color and patterns in the ice are mind-bending to me; I'm still having a hard time figuring out what I'm looking at. All I can assume is that you are looking at the surface of the lake? Could be an ice cave image for all I know. But none of that matters, this is a beautifully captured nature abstract. Wow!

The larger version is one of the best shots I've seen in awhile Wayne, and I'm not as much of an abstract fan so that's saying something. The amazing soft color and the way the vertical streaks cut through the soft waves of the horizontal lines is inspiring.
