Here's another shot from our trip to Malheur. We had some nice opportunities with this species. This was shot handheld out the car window, it's almost full frame with just a sliver taken from the top to try and place the bird's head at the rule of thirds axis.

Kurt B. had been wondering how many NPN members were on the trip - it was 4 Ken Archer, myself, May Haga, Ken Arni and 2 others who aren't members - yet!

MkIII 500F4 1.4X 1/1250 F6.3 iso 640, evaluative metering at 0.

This is great, Nate. I like how the bird just seems to be so much a part of the grasses that surround him. Tough to hide though when you've got all of that color going on. :toast:

Excellent. Their proportions make these birds hard to compose - this works nicely.

Nice shot Nate!
A beautiful specimen from my midwestern youth that I rarely see out here in the west. Always a visual treat!
Thanks for sharing.

Very nice image. So easy to clip that long tail in an effort to fill the frame with the bird and show off all that detail in their plumage. The even light was perfect for this shot.

Hi Nate, I think Ring-necks are beautiful birds that are very challenging to photograph. The full profile view really works well, great job. Great natural habitat.

Nate:
Looks like a difficult bird to photograph with juxtaposed dark and whites and all the vivid colors and the long tail to worry about. But you handled all that very nicely! :toast:

I like this very much Nate, for reasons mentioned by others. Your comp couldn't be better IMO.

Very nice composition for this pheasant, they are a challenge to frame in a way that works, and this works well. Love the colors.
