Jumping spider
by Daniel & Loana
This jumping spider (Philaeus chrysops male) was waiting for a prey on hydrangea leaves.
The sexes differ extremely for this species: males have bright orange-red on the back and the sides, with a longitudinal black stripe in the center and black shoulders.
Jumping spiders belong to the family Salticidae, and are named for their ability to jump, they can jump many times their length. They are active hunters during the day, live outdoors and enjoy the sun and have an excellent view which allows them to locate prey.
They have eight eyes, four on the face and four on top of the carapace.
Thanks for looking.

4 commentsNice capture of this brightly colored spider. I wish for a bit more DOF to see more of the critter in focus but it is nice as it is.
