Having never seen this species before this winter - I can't seem to NOT see them... I'll take the luck while I can. This was photographed a few days after my previous post but in basically the same location.

Nikon D300s 300 f4 + 1.7X TC HH
f/6.7
1/400s
ISO 800

Full Frame, sharpened bird

Nice bird in habitat shot. I'd be very happy with this one.

Fantastic Luke - love the cryptic feel but with a clear view of the bird's head as well as the head turn

cheers

Nice habitat and I like the bird apparantly acting as if it didn't know you were there.

"Having never seen this species before this winter - I can't seem to NOT see them... I'll take the luck while I can' ...
You are so right to stay on top of these birds while you can...nature is so transient and these opportunities may never come again... I've learned that the hard way a couple of times..

Great way to take best advantage of the opportunity Luke, Like this shot because it's where you see them most. If you see them at all. Great sharpness and color. :toast:

Excellent rail in habitat photo. The head-turn gives us a fine view of the bill. I'd be tempted to selectively sharpen they a just a bit in the larger image.

Rich says he would be happy with this one, heck, I would be happy to see one. Rails aren't easy! is that oof grass by the end of the beak and above the head by the eye? These blurs are a bit distracting but, who is complaining?

I'd be happy with this one too Luke. These guys are just so difficult and you got a nice image of one here. The bird is certainly in its element.

Luke,

I like how I feel I am in the rail's world because of your low angle and the setting. Love the eye contact too
