Was driving home after shooting the other day and was just struck by this nice patch of white birch across the road. Stopped and shot this with the 300mm on the camera, D-90 w/ ISO-400, 1/400th at f-5.0 and 70mm. Thanks for looking and any comments. Larger posted.

Hi Bill.
I think this might be a stronger image if you cropped off the left 1/3 IMHO.

Overall, i like this a lot, especially the great vibrant greens crossing the vertical whites--real pretty! I agree about some kind of crop so the central tree isnt so central. Im also undecided about the shallow DOF--this scene might benefit from more depth. But im glad you stopped!

Thanks guys, yeah, there is something about this patch in the middle of other trees I really like. I should have taken the time to switch the 70-300mm over to the smaller lens and get better DOF and a wider view. I still like it, but think there is a better one next time around. Appreciate the comments!!!

I think you have something with a lot of potential here. As Stan mentioned, the white trunks with the fresh green leaves look very nice. I just think this scene needs some sweet warm, but soft light to push it to that attention grabbing level.

Bill,

I think I might even take an opposing view here thinking this is a "tweener" with respect the DOF. It could work better with more depth as suggested, but it also might work better with less depth, throwing more of the background in to a soft focus allowing the viewer to concentrate on the forward trunks and leaves. These are such difficult scenes to squeeze a compelling composition from and this one here I think is just an element short of making it great; either warm light as suggested, different DOF, or perhaps a different crop or section of forest. Certainly a place that as the opportunities arise you should be working this scene again!

Thanks Chris and Lon. Yeah, this doesn't have "it", but I think the potential is here. Look forwarding to giving it some attention next time.
