Red Fox Kits

I'm primarily an avian photographer but when I get other vertebrate opportunities I usually take them. We found a den with four kits while at a local bird refuge - apparently the adult was out hunting and these guys came outside to play. We stayed in the vehicle and at times some of these youngsters approached to within 15' of us - so close that I had to swap my regular birding gear for my backup which I'm no longer used to so I was really fumbling with the settings. The angle's a little steep as it's a high truck - good thing though or we'd hardly be able to see them through the high vegetation.

Sadly, their days are likely numbered as they practice predator control at the refuge.

40D, 1/640, f/11, ISO 500, 100-400 @ 160mm, shot from pickup window on 5-25-10, cropped to 50% of original image, reduced exposure very slightly in ACR, selectively sharpened, no other processing, natural morning light

Comments/critique appreciated

The colors look a little flat to me, but that may be the way they actually were. Good detail and the kits are button cute.

Hey Ron,
Nice find and good fumbling . The eye contact and composition are spot on. The color seems a bit cool and flat here as well. I'm also curious about such a big crop with so much more lens available?
Cool shot  .

"I'm also curious about such a big crop with so much more lens available?"

Neil, I was wondering if anyone would ask about that. It was a combination of two things. Previously, these two had been play fighting and the action was fast enough that I kept clipping flying tails, feet and ears so I had backed off. But it was also the fact that I was really fumbling with my settings with this unfamiliar gear and I'm so used to shooting with the 500mm that I kept forgetting to zoom in. Live and learn...

As for the color flatness, this really does seem like the color I remember them being but I could be wrong. The greens in the vegetation look about right to me and I made no color adjustments during processing. They'd been rolling in the dust and dirt around the den so maybe that could be part of it. I'm not sure what to think...

Hi Ron !
They are giving you a curious look, as if they know that you are a bird photographer. Nice cool image, just wish that lower POV was possible.

Excellent find Ron, I like the eye contact and the foxes look sharp where it counts, good job with the unfamiliar gear.

Good comp and terrific detail, especially the eyes. To my eye white balance seems a touch cool... I think a tiny increase in warmth would benefit this capture. I assume you will be returning to this site!?

Great eye contact and color. I think a lower angle would work really well with this image.
