Violet Crowned Woodnymph

This is the female Violet Crowned Woodnymph. She came into this flower in this vertical pose, so I cropped some from the left as there was too much space. It created a fairly square final product, but I'm still happy with it.

Canon 50D, 70-200 f/4 L IS with 1.4x TC
ISO 400
f/11
1/200 (not relevant as this was done with 4 flashes that created all the light for the exposure)

Larger version included for your critical critiques.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Wonderful composition on this and I think the square crop works nicely here. Interesting elements add to the beautiful bird. Well done. Sharon

Keith, you are a master of setting up this flash arrangement for these hummer shots. Another real winner IMO. Do you also use a backdrop for your BG? Also, if you don't mind me asking, where did you learn to set up your flash arrangement? Was it from trial and error, research or someone teaching you? Wondering, beause I would like to find a good place to start reading and researching it and I haven't found a really good source yet. It doesn't seem many people know too much about outdoor lighting...unless it is natural light. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kurt - thank you for your kind words. The real master of setting this up is Greg Basco. Greg is a superb photographer who lives in Costa Rica. While on tours with him I've learned a lot and Greg is the guy who did this particular setup. I can now create the same, but Greg is the guy who taught me what I know. The background is a photo of a real OOF background. There are others out there who have tutorials / books / etc. on high speed hummingbird photography, but I'm convinced that Greg is the best one I've seen.
