Threat

Taken yesterday. I took a sequence of images as the Stellar Blue Jay hopped about. I liked this one because of the feeling of alertness and threat. Cropped a bit off the right. Yes, the tail and head were a bit cropped off in the original: This may add to the intensity--focus goes to the eyes and and expression. (??) Canon 40D and EF 400mm/5.6 Canon lens on tripod. Speed 1/400th. F11. Thanks for any critiques.

Nice picyure Tim, I bet if you zoom into its eye you can see you... Rich said it No tail, No head and No right foot. The diagonals created by the main branch and the two twigs would have given an added quality if they were visible..... but still... well done

The head is so important to the comp of an avian photo that I don't think you can get away with clipping part of it, not matter how good the tension you may capture in the bird. I think the softness of the bill - surprising at f11 - hurts you, too. Significant noise in the green background, as well. High ISO? Sharpening?

I like the comments. I still enjoy the drama of this image. Urgency. Think of the image as a cover of a mystery novel. What has the Jay seen? That eye knows something. Something drastic.

Sorry, but it needs the missing parts. Exposure looks OK.
