Cinnamon Teal

Captured this one leaving for the summer, I think. I have not seen the pair of them since shooting this a couple of weeks ago. They took to flight when a pair of Egyptian Geese came in for a landing. I may post a pic of them as I have never seen one posted before. They were in a pond with lots of Avocets mating and with hatchlings so they were always getting shooed around by something. Anyway, I think they'd had enough and took off. Thanks for looking. Please see larger version. :)

David this is really beautiful. Love the eye, the colors, the water droplets and the detail. The SS 2000 really worked. The left wing at water level is an added bonus for me. :toast:

cool flight shot, David. I like the water drops and how he's just above the water. Larger version looks a little soft--not easy to get these razor sharp, they fly so fast.

Hi David,
Awesome duck. I like the water droplets and wing tip at water level. I looked at the large image and I have to say there is a total lack of any fine detail. I know 1/2000th SS is fast but many times on fast birds that might not be enough. I think with a tac sharp image a 40% crop would still render a sharp image. So I'm leaning to motion blurr.
Thanks for posting,
Ronnie

Ronnie,

I think it was photographer error. I noticed the Egyptian Geese coming in and was not focused at all on the Cinnamon Teal. I believe I was in the act of swinging my gear when I took the photo and probably didn't do a great job of nailing this one. I agree with most of what you've said though Ronnie. These guys are really fast and sometimes 1/2000 isn't fast enough particularly when there is photographer error. Thanks as always for loking and commenting Ronnie. Your recent posts have me wanting to sharpen my skills for sure.

A lovely flight shot of one of the prettiest ducks. I agree with Ronnie that it could be sharper, but I think the problem is your focus point is back at the feet. Understandable in a bird moving that fast. Still, I'd be delighted to have this shot in my portfolio.

Beautiful color and exposure on this gorgeous bird. The issue of fine detail has been covered.

David, I have many nice static shots of the species in the water but I'd be embarrassed to admit how much time and effort I've put in to getting a decent takeoff shot and I've always failed, for a variety of reasons. This is better than anything I have of a take off after all my effort - they are tough to get. I like the wing position, the trailing water and your exposure. Agree with the sharpness nit. Let's both keep after'em.

David,

I'm in the "haven't gotten a tack sharp image of this species in flight club", probably a charter member. They are a fast moving duck! I like the pose, how the wing tips are just barely above the water, the background and the flying water droplets. As mentioned though this does appear to be some what soft. I'll keep after them if you will.
