Illinois Canyon
by Derek Yow
Illinois Canyon in Starved Rock State Park near Utica, IL.
Persistent rains, mud, and possible storms kept the masses off the hiking trails, so I had this canyon all to myself.
Pentax K-7, single exposure; 20sec, f/14, ISO-200, 18mm. Tripod, cable release, mirror lock-up.
Thanks for taking the time to look, and C&C always appreciated.
Regards,
Derek

5 commentsI think this is your first post to ES&S, so I'd like to be the first to welcome you here and to NPN.
This is quite interesting and intriguing. The light is almost a mystery - it's as if the light is being reflected up to the canyon walls. But also as you go to the right it's brighter, as if there is some mist or water falling or something; can't quite put my finger on it. It also gets soft on the far right - is that from lack of depth (because it's plenty sharp on the left and throughout the ground,) or is it soft because there's a mist? These are a couple of reasons why I said this is intriguing; can't quite figure it out. But I do know that I'm liking this the more I view it and I think it has even better potential with some additional processing. Processing that at the moment I can't think of any suggestions....
thanks for posting and we look foward to your images and thanks already for your comments and participation.

Lon, thank you for the warm welcome. You are exactly right about the mist / fog. There is a small waterfall down the canyon that was producing some mist, as well as some atmospheric fog lingering around. Thank you for catching that, as I meant to explain that in my initial comments.
I know this area very well. The bluebell canyon I call it. The waterfall is not much at the end but the canyon walls are a treat. I like the light here as well. These canyons are still cool when the sun breaks forth and it seems you caught that very well.
