Western Tanager

Canon 7D, 500mm + 1.4x TC, monopod.

1/200, f/6.3, ISO 400

Crop to 58% (10.4 of 18MP)

Came across this male Western Tanager this morning. The light was getting a little harsh already, but I think it turned out fairly well, especially with the slow SS.

Better than anything I have on these colorful birds. Nice detail; good position. I'd go a little darker to bring now the brightness on the flank.

Nice find and well captured, particularly for harsh light. I agree with Richard that it looks a bit bright in spots. :toast:

Nice composition. The Tanager is sharp, and colors are vivid. The few hotspots are a little distracting, but still a great image.

Great capture, Brian. I like the rich colors of this bird, the pose and the detail. :toast:

Nice - I also, finally, found a couple of WETA's this past week up here in B.C. I might use the S/H adjustment tool to bring down the yellow highlights. It really is a beautiful bird!

I like the really natural look of this shot, this is just how I usually see them, agreed on toning down the flank a bit. A pretty shot Brian :toast:

Perfect position and very sharp. Very nicely composed too and the the oak leaves in the background add quite a bit to this image. I can see the harsh light and think you handled it well. You could tone down the bright spots in the background a bit and make the tanager stand out. :toast:

Nice & sharp, great detail/DOF Brian.
It's tough once that sun comes up on a clear sunny day, especially so with a lighter colored bird like this. I think you managed the exposure just fine, nice catchlight and habitat too :toast:

Good job in getting this with harsh light and bright colors of the bird and at that SS, way to go.
