Crimson-rumped Toucanet

Here's another image from our recent Ecuador trip. This was taken at Paz de Las Aves. They have new fruit feeders here which were spectacular for toucans, barbets and tanagers. This is full frame and was shot at a higher iso as no flash is allowed there. No noise reduction applied. I like this image because I can see the crimson rump here.

MkIII 300F4 1/25 F5 iso 1600, evaluative at 0, Gitzo tripod

Very nice image, Nate! Very sharp and crisp. I like the hint of the toucanet's habitat and how the colors of the foliage mirrors its plumage. Easy to see how well the toucanet can disappear in the habitat. Very well composed.

Thanks for sharing this. :toast:

looks really good, Nate, and what a fantastic bird. I think I'd do a little NR on the bg, but it looks good for the ISO, and I'm surprised and pleased by the lack of noise in the bird's bill where I'd expect to see more. great details, this is very nicely done.

Hi Nate,
Cool looking bird. Great colors and good feather details. I find the background diffused just enough to where it's not distracting.
Thanks for posting,

Awesome Nate! Sounds like an great place. It looks like from the couple of posts I have seen from the trip that you guys are able to get pretty darn close to these species. Is that because of the feeders?

Thanks for your comments everyone!

Bryan, some of the shots are from feeders like this toucan, while other shots like Ken's trogon and my jay are birds that hang around the lodges in the morning because they feed on the moths and insects which are attracted to any lights which are left on at night. At some of the spots like Paz de las Aves and Bellavista you can get very close to some of the species. The downside is that at both of those places flash is not allowed so a camera that handles high isos well or excellent technique at slow shutter speeds in needed. At some of the other spots where you can use flash you typically don't get quite as close to the birds. The hummingbirds are attracted to feeders and feeder setups and you are very close to them.
