Tranquil turmoil

Hi everyone,
I have been taken up with many (and good, fortunately!) changes in my life lately, and haven't had much time for shooting new stuff.
However on Monday night, while on my way back to home from a long stay abroad, I had the chance to stop by this wonderful place for a while, and couldn't resist to take a few pics.
This is the upper lake (of two) of Fusine Valromana nearby Tarvisio in Friuli, Italy, almost certainly one of the best spot of the Giulian Alps, right at the border with Austria and Slovenia. Mount Mangart is the name of the range in the background.

I love the contrast here between the stormy sky and the perfectly still waters of the lake. Taken about 45 minutes after sunset, this is stitched from six vertical takes.

Your C&C are as always highly appreciated, thanks in advance for your time.

Techie: Eos 50D, Tokina ATX-Pro 12-24 f4, GND 8x, tripod. 30" @ f11 for each frame

Nice to see you back on display here. I like the shot, especially the composition. The colors are a bit muted and dark - not what we usually see from you. The best thing about the shot is the sky. Great magenta toning and wonderfully captured movement.

Love the sky jumping about over the mountains Paolo. Minor point, I might have moved up a hair to separate the top of the foreground rock from the reflective mountains.

I like so many things about this image, the sky, the color, the reflection. It's very impressive. My only nit would be the darkness of the mountains on the left and right. They look a bit more visable in the reflection. Is there more detail there? Perhaps a composite to help keep the detail? Just some thoughts. Thanks for sharing Paolo.

Wow, look at those clouds! I really like it Paolo.

If it was mine, I might pull saturation up a tad especially in a graduated fashion increasing more for the lower portion.

Yes the clouds contrast to the glassy water is wonderful. Great to see you back here Paolo!

Somber but beautiful, Paolo. Lovely sky and such a wonderfully still
reflection. The green plant in the bottom right corner gives the picture
that little extra something. Thanks for sharing.

I really like the image, Paolo. It's a masterful use of the current imaging technology. It's interesting how we never question how images like this are made or even possible any more. We simply accept them as part of the digital photographic world and click on to the next image.

The larger photo really shows the detail of your shot. The motion in the clouds is really nice. I bet this will make a great large print.

Paolo,

Great to see you posting Paolo! The sky is absolutely killer in this capture - and the tranquility of the lake and reflection aren't bad either! My only wish was that the sides of the mountains weren't so dark. and I'm torn about the green plant in the LRC - it's in between being distracting and providing a colorful addition. Overall, a terrific and very moody image. What a sky!

Nice to see you back in action Paolo. Mr Cobb's observation about the fg rock and the foreground is an astute one. I would have totally missed that. But it's minor and the image overall is very strong. Love the green in the fg. Might bring up the shadows a little but just a very little.

A pretty wild sky alright, and you're also right that the contrast with the calm water is immediately noticeable. While I find the photo very high in initial impact, I don't think it would be something I would choose to look at day after day. It's pretty heavy for that.

Awesome Paolo. The circular motion in the clouds you captured is amazing. If it were mine, I might try to get the reflection to include more of the drama in the sky-maybe a touch more sat and contrast, and I might also experiment with cloning a tiny bit of water back in under that foreground rock, but keeping it very dark.
