WC 440: Tale of Two Feet

Maybe not too interesting unless you are a podiatrist. Closer observation of this self-portrait reveals that one foot seems to have had a much harder life than the other. This would be true. A number of years ago I had an accident out in the wilderness - miles from anywhere - which maimed my left foot, claiming one of my digits in the process. The fact that there were not more digits missing is really amazing based on the damage and the time it took to get to the ER. The best part of the image was that it was taken at sunset on a Maui beach.

Photo information is not available for this specific image as this image was originally processed at a retail store, where the images all came back on a DVD (via a Kodak scanner).

Cheers,

Ok, Stan you asked for it. My incident involved me, my bicycle, and my brother (who I was racing downhill at the time). I got too close to the trail bank and my left foot clipped what looked to have been a large sawed off tree root that had possibly been exposed by a mini-mud slide from sometime earlier. The impact between this stationary object and my pedal effectively pulverized the top two inches (outside half) of my left foot to the point where not much was hanging on inside my shoe. Fortunately, it was right at or below freezing outside, my shoes were soaked, and my feet were mostly numb anyway. It took what seemed like an eternity to ride back to our truck then a four hour ride in my brother's truck to the hospital (my shoe finally removed and my foot packed in a bread bag full of ice). I will spare the details of me dragging around a leaking bag of fluid all over the ER lobby as ER staff had me move here and there. I asked to stand outside away from everyone else and I asked for a towel to clean up my mess… but the ER staff did not oblige me. My guess is that there are now a half dozen other people that will never go to an ER ever again unless they know they are dying (sorry folks). 40 minutes later I was finally admitted and emergency repairs started. A few weeks later, it was apparent that not all of these repairs were successful (again, spare you the details)… but I had another emergency surgery to remove all of the - obviously failed - parts. As far as I know, I do not suffer any ill effects from this accident - other than I can no longer personally count to anything higher than 19.

I know, probably best to go back to photo's at this point... :-)

Cheers,

I'm never sorry i asked, Bruce--its an interesting story, telling about health care too unfortunately...
Anyhow, glad you're ok, you could always use your arms and legs if you need a higher count
