I am matching my shutter speed to the focal length. In this case: 250th/250mm. Works pretty good.

Nice shot, you actually have a 5 fer if you count the turtles on the log! IMHO it needs just a bit more color/contrast. Thanks for posting.

I see I had pumped up the shutter speed to 1/500th for this one. On this bright cloudy day around noon it resulted in an aperture of 5.6 and with the ISO on auto it turned out to be 220. The focal length is actually 400 with the 4/3 correction. I'd say the distance was about 80 yards and of course I cropped it - to about 30%. Hand-held with a Nikon VR 70-300 lens. Cheers, George.

George,
The setting is very nice and natural but this image does not work well for me. I wish that both birds were turned towards the viewer and that the light was not as harsh. Getting out and photographing in the early hours and late afternoon would provide more pleasing light.

Yes, it is bland. I'll keep trying, having just gotten started at wildlife photography.

George, I don't think there's enough contrast between the birds and the busy background. Could be the time of day; could be your focal point. Hard to tell ...

You might be able to firm up the mid tones in this image by moving the black point to the right in levels. I'd also crop some from the bottom.
