Eastern Montana Twilight
by Doug Roane
Taken within a half mile of home. I apologize for the long explanation. I'm still learning night photography and this image required quite a bit more preparation pre- and post- capture than I expected. For the fg, I used ISO 400 and blended 3 separate exposures at f/16, 20 sec, to light paint using an amber-gelled flash. For the stars, I used ISO 3200 at f/2.8 for 10 sec, and used dark field subtraction and Noise Ninja for noise reduction. These images were blended manually in PS using a combination of layer masking and blend modes. Unfortunately, the blur in the fence post and wire from the star exposure was problematic, forcing me to clone out some of those areas on the star exposure before blending with the fg exposure, which was a real pain. I learned, in the future, to try an avoid complicated foregrounds jutting up into the sky for static star images! In the end, I feel it's a decent image, but probably not worth all that effort! If anyone can give me any tips on what I could do different, I would appreciate it.
Canon 5D2. 16-35/2.8. Please view the LARGER IMAGE to best appreciate the stars.

On the settings for the stars, I've found F4 gives a bit more realism to the stars based on a seminar I went to where Kevin Adams was talking about twilight shots.
I'm learning myself. I look forward to more of your night images.
