For the f/16 group

My last post of this area utilized a shallow dof, which predictably, was not embraced by the majority of viewers here in ESS. We do tend to prefer f/16 on this forum. Or maybe shallow dof shots done better.

Thanks for commenting on that one, and any comments and critiques on this one!

I like this one a lot, especially the type of light and the shining atmosphere... As a minor issue, I am distracted by the cut top of the tree on the upper center-right, but probably not much could be done...

I don't know, Morris. I think I liked the softer background better. This is very nice though. I'll be getting my film back on Tuesday. I hope my version came out.

This looks nice, but I think I like the softer version better too, Morris. The background looks to bright to me and the cut off tree takes away from it some also. I do think the foreground flowers are nice in this one and it looks very good to me until you get to the distant trees and sky.

Didn't see the previous rendition but this is beautiful, Morris. The array of color and variety of the wildflowers is simply incredible. I might try and decrease the brightness of the background trees and sky, but other than that, this is really nice.

I hate be predictable, but I do like this one better. That is one heck of a field of alpine wildflowers. The sky is a bit blown out, unlike the first one??

The DOF is perfect for me. It's quite a lovely array of blooms. The very bright sky is a significant issue and I would work on trying to blend in a better exposed sky if possible.

Thanks guys. I will work on the sky to balance the tones better.
Dan, I can't wait to see those scans of those large trannies!
Michael, I thought about calling this one just that, "the f64 club", but since I shot this with a dslr, I didn't want to offend you large format guys. F/16 seems to be the maximum around here due to the diffraction that is noticed by many above that.

that's a glorious field of flowers. sky's an issue. i could, however, imagine a comp with just the flowers and perhaps some object (say, that rock) to root it. almost what one gets from the bottom half of this.

Both have their merits!
Personally, I like the DOF of the first. But, I would put the focal plane on this side of that rock roughly 1/3 in. Easy for me to nit pic now. In my experience, I think it leads the eye better. A soft entry, a soft exit, yummy goodness of details in the middle. Just my opinion.

Either way this is a grand shot. Nice work Morris.

The colors, comp and variety in the FG are gorgeous. Unfortunately for me, the sky is just too much in this instance.

Morris,
I like the comp very much. I wish NE would offer such beauty. However the "bleached out" BG, seems a bit overdone. I also see this image as a bit on the cyan side. Perhaps a touch of white balance may help? Just a suggestion. :toast:

Even at f/16 it appears that focus is not maintained through the photo, so perhaps this is a good compromise  . On the other hand, maybe you'll have to figure out how to get your lens to f/64. Sharpness aside, I much prefer the arrangement of flowers in this photo when compared to the other.

Hi Morris. I did not see the shallow DOF version, so I can't compare. I love the flowers, but the white sky is not really working for me. However, it does not seem to bother most of my fellow NPN'ers..

All I can say is that I agree with what others have said - absolutely amazing fg flowers but too bright at the top, looks like some pretty tough conditions. The bottom 2/3 is about as good as it gets for wildflowers, really nice!

I shoot f/22 allot, it's the smallest apeture on my Olympus E-500.ISO 100 for maximum color saturation. It does require a longer exposure, but sometimes the DOF is awesome every part of the image is in focus. This image seem to have a great disparity in tone range, so the sky seems blown out. This would be an outstanding image if the upper part brightness was balanced with the foreground Morris.
