Thanks to Rich for the inspiration to make this post, and an even bigger thanks to Mike Lotito for tipping me off to this waxwing location. The birds don't mind photographers at all and nearly flew into my face while hawking insects.

f/6.7
1/3200s
ISO 1000 (was going for take off/landing shots)

Luke, I like the simplicity of the comp and the BG is nice. To me the bird lacks detail and critical sharpness, most likely a result of the high ISO. I have found that a high ISO setting really degrades the quality of my images. Thus, I really try to keep the ISO settings down. This of course makes it much more difficult to get tack sharp flight shots as you have to deal with slower shutter speeds and less DOF, but it can be done.

Luke

I like the background and I think it sets the waxwing off well, I also like the curve of the branch it is perched on, the raised crest, pose and the soft natural colors of this bird's plumage. Nice work on getting the dark eye to show in the black field of the eyes, not always easy to do. The plumage shows detail and I wonder if a touch more selective sharpening might enhance that.

I like the smaller size of the bird in the frame though I might take some off of the right to balance how close the tail is to the bottom of the frame.

I'm hoping we will be seeing this species soon again here.

Hi Luke. These guys have a lot of character, the raised crest and wing position is pretty typical of their plucky attitude. I'm with Mia in wanting a little bit tighter crop.

Love the pose and arching perch Luke. Maybe a fraction off the rhs?

cheers

One of my favourite birds. I don't think you will lose any interest by cropping slightly tighter, it's nice to see the fine feather detail in the bird. Never saw this species this year but here's hoping maybe next year. The background is really nice and compliments the bird very well. Graham

Hi Luke, I really like the "moment" that you captured here. Expression is a big deal to me and you have it going on with this waxwing. :toast:

An interesting and different pose Luke and I like the arching perch and beautiful background. I also appreciate the natural colors of this species you've presented here. I might go a little tighter if you have the pixels even though you'd lose a bit of the arch in the perch. But then I tend to like'em fairly tight for the detail.

Cool pose and you acheived nice detail at iso 1000. If the image can take it, I think I would crop in a bit closer. :toast:

This was full frame, so the image can certainly handle a little crop. Thanks for all the tips and comments guys.

Love that raised crest and wings back pose..The waxwing seems to be trying to maintain its balance..
Like the curved lines of the branch perch, great BG, detail, & natural color also.
Got your landing shot covered, I see you were using my settings
Well done :toast:
