Fauna Gallery - 2nd Honorable Mention
Matriarch

Thanks all for the nice and useful comments on my first posting.

I apologize for posting this one again, but I had forgotten to include the large file - also I have now tried to lighten up the eyes a bit as requested...for which many thanks!

I welcome any more comments on the processing as I'm finding it hard to keep the large file small without too much loss of quality.

About the photo:

The matriarch of a herd of elephant (Loxodonta Africana) with several young elephants - Tsavo East National Park, Kenya.

UPDATE 16 OCTOBER 2010: I'M HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE THAT 'MATRIARCH' IS CATEGORY WINNER (AFRICAN WILDLIFE) IN THE 2010 NATURE'S BEST PHOTOGRAPHY WINDLAND SMITH RICE INTERNATIONAL AWARDS :-)

UPDATE 21 NOVEMBER 2010: The same photo is also 'Highly Commended' in the Burrard-Lucas Wildlife Photo Contest 2010. Have a look at the winning images on http://blog.burrard-lucas.com/2010/11/wildlife-photo-contest-results/#more-1613

Photographed from car using tele and bean bag.

Equipment
Nikon D300
Nikkor 300mm f2.8 VR

I was suspecting this kind of detail, when I requested for large file in the earlier post.
This is simply stunning ! It takes picture to another level.

Exceptional image. I really like the crop that you have chosen, with the ears becoming the BG. Well done.

I love all elements of this picture: expression, colours, detail and light- The twisted left tusk balances perfectly the composition- Surely a masterpiece, fabio
