At The Rookery

Something very different than my normal post. This is a shot of the rookery at very first light that gives you a general view of the environment in which I take most of my wading bird images. The two Great Egret chicks were ready to fledge. I was hoping they would show their eyes but the light was changing fast and I couldn't wait any longer. This was taken in 2006 with my D100.
To Ron & Mia: I guess this would fall in that "birds small in frame" category.

This works for me quite well. You've given this scene an almost magical quality by being so attuned to the light.

Very nice dramatic look created. It almost looks like an Orton effect. Nice work.

The light on this almost primordial scene is amazing Ronnie. Getting their eyes might have been an improvement but this is at least as much about the setting as it is about the birds I think. This also gives me a feeling for how much time you must spend waiting for light in so many of those wonderful posts of yours.

Lovely rich velvety colors in that early morning light. That head down pose without the eyes gives the feeling that the birds are still sleeping. I like it as is...and I always do with your photos.

Ronnie,

This is a great example of having the bird(s) small in the frame. For me this isn't only about the birds, it is about the gorgeous setting and the incredibly lovely light. I especially enjoy the dappled light on the trees in the background.

A stunning image.

Fabulous light, Ronnie. The eyes would have been nice, but I don't know anyone who'd pass up light like that. :toast:

Ronnie, you have a real gift for capturing magical light. Here you've given a prosaic roost a cathedral-like quality. I actually like that the juveniles are still napping. It gives the shot additional serenity. Lovely work.

It's all about the light and what a wonderful background to give this a calming mood. Well done.

The rich browns and greens surrounding the birds frame them nicely.
A very unique look into their world!

There's nothing like early morning light in the cypress, BB. I know how frustrating it can be when the bird won't give you that perfect head turn and the soft light is getting hotter by the second.
