White-winged Fairy-wren

This is the first time I've managed to get a male of this species (the females are very inquisitive). I'm not totally happy with the result - it looks a bit flat but when I tinker with it, it just looks wrong, Any suggestions appreciated. These bids look amazing as they fly over the low bushes/grass - like big white winged blue butterflies.

cheers

What a handsome little fellow Rob. Whites and blues look good to me and I like the curly dried stems to the left.

Wow, what a cool looking little bird. I have never seen these before so this is a real treat. I like the included habitat as well as the perch. Good eye contact and feather detail.

In regards to your question, did you try using curves? Using a curves layer, I would start off with a slight adjustment to the blue channel at the mid point (128) and take it down to get rid of the blue cast evident on the perch. Other than that, I would use Tony Kuypers' luminosity masks in the super lights, super dark's and maybe on the basic mid-tones to fine tune the contrast.

With your permission, I could repost this to show you what I mean. Although, I have found that post production, is a matter of personal taste, so it might not be what you're looking for. Just a thought.

Nicely done. :toast:

This is a very nice photo. I like the colors of the bird, the only thing I could see to improve would be maybe to take out some of the OOF grasses in the BG. But, I like it as it is. Thanks for sharing.

Having never seen this bird before I don't have a clue what to suggest, but I like it as you have posted it. I especially like the background including the wisps of grasses behind the bird.

What an absolutely delicious bird. Can't help you on 'tinkering' as I have never seen one before (based UK) but I think I might try and take the sharpness off the grass on the left. :toast:

Beautiful bird, Rob, and your image does him justice, I think. It doesn't appear flat to me, though the bg is rather drab which helps emphasize the bird, but does seem to reduce the total impact. I like the included grasses and the way the perch draws the eye to the bird. :toast:

Stunning image. Very neat and unusually colored creature-love the BG, especially the OOF stems.

another great bird, Rob. I like this as posted, but perhaps doing a levels adjustment could expand the range a little if you wanted.

Rob,

I looked at this before I went out shooting this morning and didn't think it looked flat to me. Love the color, setting and the great pose.
