Big Brother

I was lucky enough to find this pasture full of Monarch caterpillars but struggled with most of the shots due to wind, lighting and a good DOF to show a detailed body. Enough of my poor excuses.

Canon 7D with tripod, Canon 100mm macro, Aperture Priority, 1/25 sec, F/20, -2/3 exposure comp, ISO 800.

Thanks for looking and all C&C welcomed.

John,

Cool to see the big one and the small one in the same shot. Sharpness looks a little off as does the brightness but the stats you have attest to that. I think you could have gotten away with f/16 and had a cleaner BG.

Just as a tip, sometimes in situations like this where I have a subject I really like but the BG is too close I do one of two things:
1. Lay a backpack or similar item down on the vegetation behind what I'm shooting to create more space between my subject and the background (note, don't do this if there are sensitive flowers or plants in the area!)
2. Get really low and shoot at an upward angle so the sky is your background. Often times you'll find yourself shooting something intimate in grasses that aren't very tall and a slight angle adjustment yields you a nice BG (and often times more lighting for a faster SS)

John:
Love the contrast in size between this two fellows. Reminds me of sumo wrestlers  . As you said, softness is an issue here and Luke have already made suggestions for faster SS .
