Trying out a new lens, like the looks of the hummingbird against a dark background. Not sure why this is not as sharp as it appears on my monitor, any suggestions welcomed.

Canon T1i, 1/2000 @ F5.6 ISO 800
Canon 70-300 IS USM @ 300mm
ISon, HH spot meter.

Nice catch, I also like the feel with the dark background. Do agree it appears to be a little bit soft on the head.

Nice catch John, I'd apply a little more sharpening to the face here. :toast:

Nice try, John: fine pose (wings placed well so we can see he bird and the bird slightly towards us); catchlight; interesting shadow/dark background look. If the head was sharper it would be a great shot. I'm not sure why it should appear sharper on your monitor: could have something to do with your conversion to jpg. Alternatively, perhaps the darkness of this image is the main obstacle to obtaining sharpness in the head area where you need it. You might try increasing exposure slightly in that area and having another go at sharpening there.

Nice back background and I like the light coming through the wings.
