Meadow Pipit in flight

I have a thing about meadow pipits these days, I think they get a bad press, people think of them as boring little brown jobs. I think they are a beautiful little bird when seen properly, with lots of character. I finally manage to get a picture in flight.

Same thing here in the U.S. with American Pipit - way under-rated IMO.

This is a very neat shot and I'd be thrilled with something like it on our pipit (or any over bird for that matter).

Flaps down--check. Landing gear extended--check. We're on final approach--check. OK, let's get this bird on the ground.

This is a neat flight image and a neat looking bird. Well captured, Ron.

Ron, very difficult shot to get, these small guys in flight. I really like the position you caught this bird in. I have nothing against pipits, to me all birds are great. I would love to know how much of a crop this is. Knowing how tough a shot this is you really can't nit pick too much. But, this is a critique forum and I know we are all striving for perfection in our images, so I will mention a couple of things that would have taken this image to the next level. In the larger image there is significant noise in parts of the bird (wings for example). This does dectract a bit and is probably due to a large crop. A bit more of head turn to see the eye better and get a catchlight also would have made this a stronger image. Overall, a cool shot.

Amazing sharpness for this type of shot Ron - a slight turn of the head and 11/10

cheers

HI Guys

Thanks for the kind comments

Ron,
The crop is about 60% of the image. The light wasn't great and there is some grain there.

I have been trying for months to get an image like this of one of these birds. This is the best so far. I hope to get better.

So watch this space

Ron

I'll be watching this space! For starters, the Pipits I've found here in North America and in South-east Asia have all flown away from me. Well done getting him landing towards you! However, I too would have liked a catchlight.

Ron,

I agree with you about "little brown jobs" not gettting enough press, it is a shame when a well done "little brown job" gets passed over when colorful birds and raptors seem to get good press. This is a fun image and I find the pose to be interesting and unique.
