I got a number of photos of this guy taking off and landing at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands last spring. I like this one because having just lifted off there are many water drops still connecting him to the water and while he stretches to get airborne you can see the reflections of light from the water in the shadow on his wing's underside.
Canon 7D
EF 100-400mm @ 400mm f5.6
ISO 400
1/2000s
Cropped just a bit for composition.

As always, comments and suggestions for improvements are much appreciated.

Thanks to all who posted comments on my first post last week. The feedback was great and made me want to go back out there and take more photos, and that's what it's really all about! Thanks!

Andrew, I like the position of the bird and the great water reflections under the wing. I agree, that more room in front and a bit less behind resulting in more room in front of the bird than behind it would improve the comp. The sharpness of the bird in the larger version looks good, but there seems to be a lack of detail in the feathers. Did you use NR on the bird as well as the BG? That would result in a loss of a lot of detail in the feathers. It is best never to use NR on the bird. Just a suggestion to improve a nice BIF image. Cheers.

Agree with Ron regarding detail. I would however, leave more room ahead and a little above the bird. I like the droplets trailing from the feet hence why I would leave space behind it as is. Your call Andrew. I like it!
