Polar Bear and her cub

Nikon D300, Nikon AF-S 300mm f4, 1/640, f5, ISO 400, from a Zodiac floating in a rough sea

A Polar bear is offering a piece of meat to her cub. The meat is from a whale dead and beached several months ago in a bay in North of Spitzbergen, the greatest of Svalbard Islands. The whale has been an "open air restaurant" for many bears from winter 2009 till now.

This pic has everything one can ask for. Cute subjects interacting in a way that is endearing and of importance in natural history. Love the way mom is leaning up to reach the baby :toast:

A terrific photo. The interaction between mother and cub just draws me in. I associate polar bears with ice and snow - unusual to see photos of them without it.

Terrific. I like this very much. Techs look good. If this is full frame I might experiment with a slight crop on the right edge to make the diagonal of the adult bear and the sloping rock point directly at the lower right corner, probably resulting in a 4x5 ratio image. I especially like the tension of her step up posture, the inclusion of the water's edge, the food in her mouth that looks about to be released, and the turn back posture of the cub. The tiniest of regrets is that the top of the cub's head seems to intersect with the mother's eye. All in all I would have been thrilled with this capture due to the natural compositional elements and the wonderful dynamic of the poses.

Really sweet shot with the heads touching and the climbing pose of the adult.

There is action (on the mother's part), there is ruggedness (the rocks), and a lot of warmth (mother and cub) in this lovely image! :toast:

Hi Marco,

Very well done, and very interesting and pleasing to view. Lon and the others have made a number of good comments so I won't repeat them. My biggest nit is being deprived of the pleasure of viewing this at a larger size (which is really no nit at all!). A MUCH smaller nit is the inclusion of that band of water on the bottom of the frame - I think this already very strong image would be even better if it were limited to just two elements - the great interaction of the bears and the rocks.

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

Brad

PS: Please don't hesitate to jump in and comment on the images of others - I know the recommended ratio of 5 comments for every image post can be tough to maintain, but getting a little closer to this comment:image ratio would be appreciated. I know many members are a little hesitant to leave comments, but ultimately the success of all the galleries are determined largely by the comments members leave on the images that are posted. Almost everything has been said, so i will limit my intrusion to a well done, I like the interaction between the two of them, and I have one consideration: how tender can be a "killer" like mother bear with its, no, her cubs...
Ciao.

I like the head to head interaction I see Marco, great work.
Especially so when one considers you were in a moving boat..
