"Jonesing for Sandstone"

Hi all

Extraction is not necessarily the title of the image but rather something I gleaned from old Ansel Adams. I watched an interview of Ansel Adams which are always quite fascinating. The interviewer commented that a particular image was an abstract. Ansel went on to explain this: (not verbatim) Can you really have abstraction in photography because you evidently have a realistic image through your lens. Painters have the ability to build up a series of impressions through color, shape and texture. Ansel would rather think of them as
"extractions". An interesting thought and something I used when shooting last nite.

I had a few hours to get out to one of my favorite spots and shoot. Working time was only about an hour and a half so I had to make the most of it. That comment Ansel made resonated as I shot a section of sandstone. Tony K also came to mind
I just love shooting subjects such as these and learning to extract the landscape onto my sensor. I think I grabbed a view images that I can share and am excited for the upcoming seasons. It has been a busy summer and kind of slow photographically for me but am gearing up for a productive fall and winter season. Website will hopefully be around the corner and anxious to start down some new roads.

Thanks again for all your support here and your comments on this one
Much appreciated

Very nice abstract Anthony. I really like the warm tones and the way this is divided into three distinct section, each very different from the others. Great eye to see this and to compose it so successfully.

Well, im at a lack for words....and ive already spent about 5 minutes staring at this, so kudos for rendering me speachless. It kind of reminds me of a a two dimensional version of a fine art sculpture. I'm not really crazy about fine art sculptures--but im sure there's a university near you that will gobble this stuff up

I too quite like the 3 distinct sections of the image and the strong line between them. An interesting shot.

Gosh, darn, this is good, Anthony, and not just because it's sandstone, but that, of course, does help. I like the variety in this as well. While try to aim for a "purity" of stone, this encompasses quite a bit of other stuff, but it all works great in the frame. Processing is impeccable as always. Nice extraction. Now, I wonder if inception is possible? That would throw old Ansel for a loop, wouldn't it?

Gorgeous Anthony. Fascinating formation that with your extraordinary eye works so very well as an abstract image. Superbly done.

This is great! Love the different 'regions' in this image created by the cracks and rocks! I have a feeling this will look even better on a very large print! :toast:

Honestly, my initial reaction was kind of ambivelant. Didn't really dislike it, but wasn't excited either. But, I have to say, a second longer look revealed a lot more to me in this shot. The colors are rich, the textures diverse, and the detail is tack sharp. Nice job of using what was there to create some nice lines within the frame too. It's a solid shot, nice work!

What's capturing my eye the most here is the fascinating variations in chroma.

Very, very nice Anthony. All the shapes go very well together and create a lot of interest. The warm colors strengthen the image, its contents and is very pleasing. Beautiful abstract or should I say extract.
