Hot magma!

Well, lava, actually... Taken on an amazing hike through active lava flows on the 'Big Island' (Hawaii). Too bad I couldn't have been here at twilight, such an amazing phenomenon to witness streams of hot flowing lava. As it was I had to content myself with mid-day photos using a polarizer to remove some glare. This little scene caught my eye, the lava forms lots of interesting shapes as it cools, but then a new stream of fresh hot lava will break through...

I think this is an awesome picture Daniel. Very cool (not literally) and unique. I love that kiss of fire and the details in the cinders. Amazing! :toast:

I hope that was taken with a telephoto.

Kathryn, no this was taken at a distance of about 8 feet! We were given special permission to hike in the area with an expert vulcanologist who was conducting research, and he said it was safe - personally, I was kinda nervous, esp. when we walked over cooled lava with cracks in it, and you could see the fresh hot lava still flowing underneath your feet. According to him, once it had been 'cool' for 2 minutes, it was safe to walk on...

Great photo, and not one that most photographers will have an opportunity to make. I love the silvery tones of the lava, accented with red.

This is really neat. I love the way you've handled this, and the obvious conflict between it being monochromatic and colorful. Very nice job Daniel.

That is so, so cool, figuratively speaking, course. The glow certainly stands out against the monochrome cooler stuff.

This is very cool. I like it a bit more with a little cropped off of the top. To my it puts a little more focus on the glowing red.

This is excellent in how it shows the hot lava just behind the cooled outer layer! I like the comp and the great detail in the shot. I think this is rope lava, or as the Hawaiians call it, Pahoehoe. :toast:

The touch of red among black and white is very affective and eye catching. The lighting give the texture added dimension.

Phenomenal Daniel. The textures, those silvery tones, and that glow ... one stunning image. Had to be pretty 'warm' up this close I would imagine. Amazing.

I think this turned out very nice! My only wish would be for a little more red, and as you said some darker light to show off the glow.
