This little basin is definitely off the beaten path (read: JMT), and is a gateway to some of the most beautiful cross-country travel that I have ever experienced in the Sierras. This was a trip without the kiddos, just my Love and I, traversing the granite ridges for 4 nights, in celebration of our 14th year together.

It may have been the perfect trip.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions!

Fantastic shot. This is really special. One of the best mountain scenes I've seen here for a while.

Great veiw of Julius Ceasar Mtn, the moon adds a nice touch to the scene. I like the way you squeezed into the comp Cory. It could use a little distortion or tilt fixing since the peaks on the right aren't lining up correctly from top to bottom. I favor this kind of light over the direct alpen glow. Had some ligaments pop in my knee up here while shimming aournd a rock on the lake's edge a few years back. Miraculously no swelling, thank god. Not something you want to feel and hear 4,500 ft above the trailhead. Thanks for sharing the pristine views Cory! :toast:

Corey - The colors an glow created are fantastic. My only suggestion might have to do with composition. Most of the action/interrest seems to be on the right, but the grass area on the left takes up a bit too much room for me. Unfortunately , a crop would take off the far peak and that would be a shame! Maybe a slightly different camera position with less grass. The moon reflection seems too close to the rock, again might have meant moving around to the left, but unsure what that would have done to the other elements. Anyway, ove the shot overall and the light bouncingoff the rocks.

Beautiful basin and a nice capture.

I'm surprised none have picked up on this, but there is a clockwise tilt of several degrees.

Steve - This is actually a shot towards the west-northwest. Mt. Julius Cesear sits back and to the right of the shot. I agree, I love the softer glows that happen well before actual sunrise, especially when not a single cloud can be found. Also glad you made it out in one piece, with all ligaments attached!

Harry - I took several different comps, but chose this primarily for the curve of the grass, which provided a nice lead in to the main focal point of the image. Other comps, with less grass, did not have such a nice lead in (as well as other issues with fg rocks). With regards to the moon, as you can see, moving right eliminated the reflected moon, which looked incomplete. Moving left meant more grass. And I was at the max height of my tripod, with nothing but grass behind.

Mel - It may seem this way if you look at the right-side shore, but the far left-side shore tilts the other way. Neither shore ran perpendicular to my lens, so they wouldn't appear horizontal in the image.

Gorgeous! Sure looks a lot different than when I was there this June and everything was covered in snow! I love the little grassy curve. Must have been a great trip, I wish I could've spent more time up there myself this summer, thanks for letting me pretend to be there again!

Man, you got some great stuff on this trip. That is really special lighting, set off by the nice moon. I love the way you got the moon reflection to show well in that tiny window.

Cory,

I love scenes like this - your passion for this area really shines through. What a wonderful time to share with your wife! I agree with the you about the blade of grass acting as a leading line. I think it works very well. I also like the lushness of the grass in stark contrast to the barreness of the rest of the landscape. Actually the grass is probably my favorite part of the scene. Of course, you present an image like this on NPN and you'll get plenty of opinions. From my stand point, the only thing I can suggest for improvement is to tone down the brightness of the image. It just seems a tad too bright on my monitor. Anyways, as presented works very well. Thanks for sharing this inspirational shot.

Wonderful light, color, and clarity. Ideally, maybe a little more separation for the moon and the peak and the rocks in the reflection, but that is really being nit picky. Gorgeous, peaceful image, and how great was it that you got to spend that kind of quality time with your wife?
