Last winter we spent some time in Key West, FL. One of the best butterfly conservatories I have been in is in Key West. I spent a couple of hours there shooting images. I am just learning to identify butterflies, so I don't have an ID on this one.

Canon 30D
Sigma 70-300
Aperture Priority
Shutter 1/250
Aperture f8
ISO 200
238mm
Flash

Can't help you with an ID, Richard; most of the time searching on the 'net helps.

Butterfly has a lot of crisp detail. I like the diagonals in your composition. I think you have a winner here.

Ciao ;^)

Richard:
Looks like a swallowtail (Papilionidae).
Good sharpness and details from wingtip to wingtip. Also nice exposure, not hint of flash been used.

Excellent work Richard,
I especially like the DOF/detail and exposure of the black here :toast:

I am fairly sure Gary is right for a starting point on the id (swallowtail (Papilionidae)). You'll want to be looking at Asian species although which one in particular, I don't know.

Maybe Troides species of some sort.

Sweet colors and composition. The flash is a little obvious but not too bad - try lowering the exposure on the background of the image to control the effects of the flash.
