Adirondack Autumn
by Donald Case
Long time viewer / admirer of this site, first time posting a photo. I've been photographing the landscape a long time, but fairly new to digital, post processsing etc. Kind of anxious how my first try will look. This is from the top of Mt. Van Hovenberg in upstate NY, early October of last year. I was on this mountain the day after Ian Plant was up here....Nikon D80, 18-50 lens, grad filter

Technically speaking I would say get a hold of Tony Kuyper's actions and learn the mechanics of them. Great tools for the digital tackle box. Im unsure on the sliver of rock but im not sure how much closer you could get but emphasizing the trees and scene in front of that is just magical. Great first post and thanks for sharing
Welcome to NPN. Spectacular first post. I like it very much. I'll echo the others' sentiments about the rock, athough I don't mind it. The colors are fantastic and you did a wonderful job of handling the dynamic range of the scene. I look forward to seeing more images from you soon.

Welcome to the ES&S Gallery! Looks like you joined a while ago and certainly glad you decided to finally post an image.
What a great autumn scene from the Adirondacks. I really like the combination of fall foliage with the storm/cloudy skys and rays of light hitting the landscape.
Not too much to critique really, but I would completely echo Anthony's recommendations about Tony Kuyper's masks, actions and Tutorials. And the one thing I think could be improved here is the contrast and shadows. This appears a little "hazy" - not necessarily from the atmosphere, but because I think you could drop the shadows a bit. The added contrast I think, would clear that up a little and even give this a little more pop.
As far as the rock in the FG, I'm a little indifferent. But it does border on being a "tweaner." And that basically means I either want to see a little more so we can enjoy the foreground element, or none at all. It's right in between more or none - hope that makes sense.
A little tweaking in PS and this will be quite wonderful.
Welcome! We look forward to your participation.

Nice post, love all the colors and nice drama in the sky. the fg rock is a tad distracting, but probably nothing you could do about it. Spend some time on the site and you will get some great information on digital processing.
Have fun
