Puffin head shot

I realise this is a bit tight in the frame, it was taken a few years ago when I was obsessed with getting right in close with my new telephoto lens  We've all been there haven't we? oh, ok, just me then

This is a square crop from a landscape format image, I cropped just a little from the bottom as the fish tails were missing anyway, to concentrate on the face more.
Top and right are as shot.

Taken on Skomer Island in West Wales, UK with my old 6 Mp Minolta DSLR.

Minolta Dynax 7D
Sigma 50-500 EX
1/800th sec
f6.3
ISO 200
500mm
-0.7 stop exposure compensation
Centre-weighted metering
Hand held

That is really cool. I can't imagine how the bird got that many fish all at once. The detail in the shot is outstanding! Who says we need more than 6Mpx?

Yeah, a little tight, but a beautiful capture. The faces on these birds are just amazing. Very nice image.

Geoffrey,

I love the detail in the bill and in the fine feathers behind the bill and towards the eye. I probably would have increased my ISO some to get a bit more dof, perhaps f8 - f9 the have the eye sharper, it seem the dof drops off within the eye. I might be tempted to run a little NR on the background.

Neat portrait, I'd like a little more dof and a little more space on top. :toast:

Beautiful image Geoffrey. I love the details in both the fish and the bird feathers. Superb details. I think the comp might be too tight. Yes, we've all been there. Count me in. Would have loved to see you stop down even further to get more eye detail. Focus point is more on the beak/fish than the eye but a stellar image Geoffrey. I'd love to have this in my collection. :toast:

Wow great detail for an older camera. I used to shoot with a Canon G2 for years. Some of those shots are still my favorites. :toast:
