Autumn Flow

As is typical for waterfalls, some folks will have their preference for a different shutter speed. I was going for more of an abstract image here, and used the Singh Ray Vari-ND filter in late afternoon shade to intentionally get a shutter speed of 30 sec. There was a mild golden reflection on the water which I, admittedly, enhanced significantly in PS.... Would love to know your reactions to this image.

11 commentsIn many images I am not a fan of shutter speeds this long, as they often turn clear water into what looks like milk. There is something about this image, however, that makes this work -- I think it's the clarity that shows through at the top of the falls and around the log. The "structure" of the water shaped as it falls over and hits the rocks also looks good to me, too - much better than being completely flattened out like a thick milkshake. This works well with the warm glow, too. Unusual and lovely.
I love it. Very nice. I agree with Stan that a really tighter crop would be very abstract .. but this stands fine as it is.Don't mind Stan, he's still upset about the weather you got up at Skolai last year. :)
Cheers

Yeah, Carl - you can just feel the bitter tone in Stan's comments, but I can sympathize with him! I hope you brought a book, Stan!
I appreciate Stan's honesty as I know he appreciates it on his images!
My intent was 'more of an abstract image', but not really totally abstract. I personally like the rocks, especially the counterpoint of the ulc and lrc rocks, which for me, ground this a little into reality and provide anchors to the comp. Besides, I really love milkshakes!!!! I do have some tighter comps, but I missed the rocks and especially the golden glow. And yes, Aaron, I do have a comp like this at 1.5 sec also.
