Surf Scoter

We get rafts of Scoters here beginning from late Autumn/Fall. Clambered down some rocks at a jetty to get a lower angle - this one male decided to take-off fairly close to me.

1D MkIV, 300mm f2.8 + 1.4X, 1/3200 @ f8, ISO800, hand-held, morning light, just a touch of S & H.

Thanks for looking; Your comments welcomed.

Sweet action and species. I wish I lived somewhere we I could see rafts of these birds! Love the running/lift off pose. Good job on the exposure. :toast:

Was this at Point Roberts?

It was at our local sewage jetty, although I did see Scoters at Point Roberts, WA earlier.

Thanks, Nate.

Great action! Like the clear shot of the head and the way the feet are positioned just above the water.

Sweet paddle action KC. Love the feet on this shot. Bird looks nice and sharp and the reflection adds IMO. Well done.

Wonderful image KC, how nice that this scoter decided to take off so close to you! Great action & eye contact. Love the comp, reflection and the eater. Would love a chance with this species closer than the 200 yards I'd usually got to see them at in Florida

Great image. Looks like he's running rather than flying. Interesting feather pattern.

KC - you may be envious of the recent Long-tailed duck flight shot, but man I'd trade that for this! The fact that the feet are above the water without it being broken is visually awesome and the detail is stunning. The best Scoter photo I've seen.

Wonderful! Beautiful shot technically, and with the position of those feet, it really tells the story of the bird taking off. :toast:

Superb capture, KC. Great wing and leg position, one of these turned up off the cornish here in the UK.
