Welcome Adam, it looks like you have good sharpness in the bird and I like the clean green bg in this image. Composition wise I would take just a little more from the top, about 1/2 inch or so. The bird looks oversharpened a little bit and I can see a sharpening halo around the bird so reducing the sharpening some and/or only sharpening the bird should help with that. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your images. :toast:

A really nice comp Adam. I love the BG and the simple perch. The bird does look a bit oversharpened. Nate's suggestions should help. Welcome to NPN.

Welcome, Adam. You certainly picked a neat bird to start out on. It's difficult to tell whether it's a resizing issue or basic image quality, but the image looks just a bit soft to me. What triggered me is that the catchlight in the eye doesn't look quite crisp. It looks like you were dealing with some pretty harsh light here, and it shows a bit in the starkness of the shadows and the fact that the whites seem just a bit oversaturated. in places. A bit of overcast or early morning /late evening light seem best for high contrast subjects. A very nice pose and composition. I look forward to seeing more of your work. :toast:

Welcome aboard Adam. It helps to list all the exif data of the shot to help us determine what settings may or may not make the shot better. I notice right away that some of the whites appear to be a little bit hot. It always helps to provide the larger 500 kb image so we can check details. It looks like this was shot at a wide aperature (nicely blurred out background) but also a relatively short depth of field. For birds that are perched where you have time and they are not moving much it's always best to stop down a couple stops. That will improve yor depth of field giving you more detail in the feathers as well as sharpness from front to rear. When you are shooting birds with lots of white exposed you may want to consider exposure compensation so you don't blow out the whites and shoot on overcast and not sunny days. You appear to have tough lighting for this image so there is only so much you can do.
Overall Adam, you have a great looking bird and a fine perch with a nicely blurred background. The composition is good the head angle is good and you have catchlight in the eye. A very good start. You will learn so much from all of the really good photographers on this site. Looking forward to your next post Adam. Once again welcome aboard. :toast:

Terrific first post Adam, Welcome!! Beautiful clean background with this guy, and a nice simple copmosition. Agree the bird looks a tiny bit soft or something...knowing the lens you have (same one I take 99% of my bird photos with), looks to me like this might be a bit of a crop?

Hope to see more from you soon!
