Clivia at Blake Garden REPOST

Photo taken at Blake Garden on 6/28/10. Was one of the last things I photographed that day. Just noticed the plant when walking out. Blake Garden is the official home of the University of California President and is open and free to the public on weekdays. It is usually a very quiet and peaceful place and has several areas including a cutting garden that often has large flowers that make great subjects. I wrote a blog entry on the garden this past spring: http://naturalhistorywanderings.com/2010/03/15/a-secret-garden-blake/

Comments welcome.

Canon 30D with a100mm macro
1/1000sec at f/3.2; exposure bias -2/3EV
ISO 400 (not necessary forgot to turn it down)
Aperture Priority
Metering mode: partial (similar to spot but uses larger center area for reading)

I like this as posted Sandy. What a great subject. My only suggestion would be to consider doing a little fill light in the shadows. Don't know that, that would improve the image without seeing it - so just a thought.

Sandy:
Nice bunch of flowers. The orange color really pops with the black bg. Wish for a bit more DOF.

Hi Sandy, nice light and the dark BG really sets the flowers off nicely. I do wish for a bit more DOF to bring the flowers at the top into focus.

I found a version I did at f/8 so it had more DOF. I also tried a little fill light as Pat suggested. Let me know what you think.

Love the apparent simplicity of this, Sandy. It's nicely composed ( the subject seems just right for a centred composition ) and very well lit, with the shadowed areas working very well for me.
