Matthews River Majesty

Gallery: LandscapePosted October 6, 2010138 views9 comments
Taken in August on the south slope of the Brooks Range, Alaska, on the Matthews River. Not very many sunny days in this area. Lots of fog and rain.

D700, tripod in water. Feet-------cold.

Sorry, I cannot get the larger version to load on NPN. It shows 460 kb and in under 500 when sent???

Over processed?

Great scene, and nice comp, Larry! The clarity in the bg really makes this a pleasure to look at, even if it's relatively straight-forward. Blue in the sky seems a tiny bit strong--otherwise looks good. :wavey:

Larry,
This is simply a gorgeous view on a very clear day. Might be a bit more cohesive if the brush on the left did not obstruct the distant river bank, but I don't know what it looks like back there, to maybe it's a good thing. I know we are always looking for a strong foreground, but I think sometimes (really -- just sometimes) they get in the way. (Wierd personal view.)

Nice light on the peak, although as Stan mentioned - the sky seems a bit strong. Nice comp and perspective. It was well worth your cold feet!

Very pretty scene. I could see cropping a bit of the lower part of the frame to better emphasize the mountains and sky.

This is just lovely Larry. I prefer a crop of about 10% off the bottom, and maybe the right side, if you want to keep the same aspect ratio. The mountains seem a little smudgy - ?compression ?noise reduction

I forgot to mention this was taken with a polarizer to slow down the shutter speed for water action up close.

However, the sky, in higher latitudes is very intense. I remember just looking with my naked eye at the sky, especially contrasted with white clouds, and noting the blue-black color.

This is another reason why the sky perhaps looks overdone.

Thanks for the comments. Will do some crop work and perhaps color intensity.

I wish people posted more images from this region... it looks beautiful. I too could see this with a small crop off the bottom, but this works as presented too. Nice to see something a bit different and well captured.

Great light on the peaks of the mountains :) Great views indeed :) It gives the feel that ypur slowly floating on the river behind the curve of the river closer to the mountains ... Nice image
