Hunting season has opened here in VT. As I took to the water I quickly realized that probably wasn't a really good idea (not sure the clue was the first, or the third shot). After racking the kayak on the SUV I relocated to another portion of the refuge where I could find waterfowl not in jeopardy of the line of fire. While on the refuge jeep side trail, this GBH was spooked by the report of a distant shot.

The heron looks good here Chuck, for me the fg oof grasses are a significant distraction in this one. :toast:

I have to agree with Nate on the foreground. Nice capture, though.

I agree with Nate, that the OOF grass in front distracts quite a bit. I like the feel of what is going on in the main part of the frame.

Too bad the bird wasn't a little higher in the frame. Darn grass is in the way :frown:

Agree about the foreground grasses Chuck but the bird looks good. I really like the wing position. Hunters here are a mixed blessing - they cause lots of annoying traffic on the refuge dirt roads where we shoot and we once had horizontally traveling shotgun pellets splash in the water very close to us (should'a heard Mia's reaction - well, maybe not...) but once the birds get used to all the traffic they're much more approachable for us.

Chuck,

I also think the OOF foreground grasses detract from the overall image, if the heron had been a foot or two higher I don't think it would have been a problem. I like the setting behind the heron, the vegetation and water back there gives it a great sense of place, I also like the position of the heron's wings and head.

Waterfowl hunting season has opened here, it gives me hives sometimes when I think how close some of the shot has gotten to us.
