Hello,
this shot was taken at Brazoria NWR last summer. I have never seen before this colorful bird, so I was happy for this capture even if I would have preferred a cleaner background.

Thanks for viewing.
C&C are very welcome.

I have never seen one of these colorful birds myself, and would without a doubt grab a shot like this. That IS one huge foot, good timing getting it raised like that.

I like the position of the foot.

I really like the intimate look at this interesting pose Monica, especially with that huge foot so conspicuous above the water. I'm fine with the background but wonder about toning the foot down a tad...

Wonderful work getting the iridescences so well and avoiding glare off the bill. The background is just fine for me; it's the habitat, after all. If it were mine, I'd selectively darken the left foot just a bit. I'd leave is slightly bright to emphasize the size of the bugger, but not quite this bright

Like the pose and setting Monica. Looks like the light was pretty harsh. I'd be tempted to tone down the raised foot

cheers

Hi Monica,
I agree the raised foot adds to the image. Light is a little harsh for this species. This is a very difficult bird to properly shoot. The light has to be low and then you have to be lucky to get one out in the open.

Monica,
I think that you have a point about the BG but in this shot the bird and its pose are so dominant that it matters little. Really good post!

Monica,

I like the setting in your image, it is the type of habitat this species prefers. Purple Gallinules are a challenge to expose properly, that frontal shield is easily blown as are the very white feathers of the undertail coverts. You handled the exposure nicely though I might tone down the raised foot a little bit. Nice look at the red eye of this species too.

Beautiful and interesting image, Monica. I bet once you tone down that raised foot you'll see more detail in it too. :toast:

Really neat shot Monica, I have next to nothing on this species. I like the huge raised foot and would try to tone it down a little bit, nice work. :toast:

Terrific! Love that raised foot, and the brilliant colors of the bird. I think I might darken the raised foot a bit, but that's minor. Beautiful shot! :toast:
