The crooked aspen

This is an image from a few weeks ago. Walking around in the forest and climbing steep hills this tree catched my attention. I knew directly how I wanted to frame this scene. I tried to keep the colors natural, I find it easy to oversaturate autumn colors.

The image doesn't seem to have a center of attention for me. My eye did not know where to go when I first looked at the image.

I think you succeeded in keeping the colours more or less natural Anders. The tree does have a nice shape but seems to get lost in the clutter. How could you improve on this? I'm not sure. Your image is also suffering a little bit in either compression or lack of sharpness that is a bit of a distraction.

Thanks for your comments, I appreciate your feedback. It is a bit cluttered with all the branches and it might need to be improved. I tried some different angles onsite but this one was the one the worked the best. I think I was focused (maybe to focused) on the combination of colors, the yellow leafs and the green spruces.

I viewed this last night at home and it looked much better than on my lousy work monitor. This image just shows that true beauty in nature is not always in a perfect, flawless setting. My only nit is the the bright BG in the URC is a bit distracting.

Anders,

This is certainly one crooked and twisted tree. I think you've done well to place and compose this. The open area at the bottom allows the eye to be pulled in a little bit and the canopy of the tree fills and frames the top of the image nicely. The colors are indeed natural looking and you did well with the exposure.

Artistically this is just a plain old difficult and chaotic scene. I don't think there's much you could have done differently. there is just a lot going on here. Ideally if you could somehow isolate the tree or a portion of it against some contrasting color or pattern then I think this could work. In the end my eye wanders around and never really finds a place to rest. Still, a nice image, but a bit too much going on.
