Golden Crowned Kinglet
by Craig Strand
I found a small group of Golden-crowned Kinglets at the Ridgefield NWR yesterday. These little birds are a favorite of mine for both their beautiful markings and the challenge of capturing them. It must be an unwritten law in the "Kingdom of Kinglets" that staying perched in one spot for more then a few seconds OR giving the appearance of posing is forbidden!

6 commentsCharlie, Here in the Portland OR/SW Washington area, we are just getting the golden crown kinglets back. They migrate a bit farther north normally for summer breeding. We usually have the ruby crowned around year round. The golden crowned are same size as the ruby but unlike the ruby, the golden crown males crown is always visible to a degree,at least from what I have seen. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Like the ruby's the goldens are little dynamo's, a ball of nervous energy that rarely spends more then a few seconds on a branch and are usually hidden in branch clutter. The difficulty is getting them in the viewfinder and the auto focus to pick them before they move to the next branch. Try often enough and with patience we all get lucky and find one out in the open and long enough for a few shots.
