Overnight trips after the start of a school year are quite rare for me. On this on, I was able to reconnect with a favorite location, Granite Basin. You can see more images and more of the story behind them in my recent blog post.

The color of the grasses is awesome and compliments the pastels of the sky very well. I am just a little unsure of the boulder in the middle, as it blocks my eye from really exploring the whole scene.... and what a cool location it is.

This is so nice - especially the large version! Beautiful color really glows, and the comp is superior. Great work Kent!

Excellent color and a beautiful scene. My suggestion is the same as Jimmy's. Moving off to the right, if possible, about two or three paces I think would be a big improvement, as it would put the elements into a diagonal comp.

Hi Kent,

Lovely textures and patterns in this image complete with an enticing and endless view. I have mixed feelings about the unconventionally centered fg rock; moving it would be nice, but I do like the rest of the scene as presented. I think maybe you could come in a little from the right without comprimising the interity of the image. Just a few thoughts....

Love the composition, and really nice color. There are a lot of different shapes that come together nicely in this one.

Interesting photo, Kent. The unconventional composition works well enough for me, and I'm not entirely convinced that moving that boulder to be off center would make it any better.

Oh my! What a nice image. You brought out every nuance of detail, and color here. A nice edgey comp too. I'm loving the rich tones of the grasses and ground cover.

I have to say I really like the centered rock. Centering gives it a very iconic appeal, almost like a keystone. Great work.

Stellar image, Kent. I like the small but colorful sky, the rock pointing me into the scene, and those gorgeous grasses.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. I have to say, I'm not surprised at all that the boulder location is a sticking point or that it's controversial. In the end, my decision about it was based on my perception that the rock itself has a very obvious "direction" and it's one that only fits the scene from a centered location.

This has quite some impact Kent! Very bold lines and shapes which make it work really well. I also like the colours a lot.

Kent,

Excellent! The fall color is beautiful here, but I'm especially intrigued by the granite in the foreground. To me, it looks like a compass needle pointing north, or home, who knows, but pointing somewhere... Very interesting and beautiful landscape.

Wonderful. Not a criticism but I would also like to see a compo with the boulder a little off center.
