Food for Thought

SORRY for posting this again...I had uploaded the wrong file for the large format in my previous post...
After finishing a fine meal of dead wildebeest, this lioness' face was covered with flies, feeding on the blood and left-overs...

This photo is NOT CROPPED.

8 commentsThanks for giving us a look at the larger version. As expected - very sharp, very nice detail.
You say this image is not cropped and it was shot with the equivalent of a 450mm lens (factoring in the crop factor of the DX sensor of your camera). So you must have been quite close to it. Your commentary suggests it was not a captive lion - I'm curious about the shooting situation - care to fill us in a little? Looks to me like you must have been almost lying on the ground to get this one. Purely curious...
Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

No, not captive at all - we happened to drive past this lioness who was just beside the road - it was in a 'less busy' part of the Mara so we had her all to ourselves - we carefully approached and she wasn't bothered...at a guess (I'm not good at distances ;-)) she was 3 or 4 metres from the road.
I took the photo from the open window and with the road slightly lower than where she was in the grass, I was almost at the same level. She looked straight at me a few times which was a bit...exciting...but realistically...she had just eaten so there was no danger. I think.
Thanks for your comment!
Ingrid.
