In keeping with my small bird postings, here's another Savannah Sparrow from the other day on the same barberry shrub. I was quite pleased with the composition presented to me.

Nikon D300s 300 f4 + 1.7X TC HH laying in grass
f/8
1/1000s
ISO 640

Very nice capture! You may consider a vertical comp cutting out some of the oof bayberries. I really like the perch with the red berries. :toast:

You should be pleased with the comp. It is a situation where it just fits IMO. Sweet.

The branches give a nice graphic design to the image. I'd crop a bit tighter, putting the branches into the top corners and keeping the sparrow centered.

Excellent, Luke. The composition is really neat with those spreading branches. :toast:

Good job catching a head turn and subject on such an interesting perch, especially the red berries. A small crop from the right side to get him less centered would be my suggestion though (edge of frame brought just inside the vertical stem in LRC).

Nicely captured Luke. I like the perch and the position of the bird. I also think a tighter crop from the top would work well here. :toast:

Nice shot. I like the crisp lighting and also the barberry perch. From a personal point of view I would crop off some of the empty space at the top of the frame down to just above the stem on the left.

It's a bit centred but on this occasion i think the wonderful perch warrants it - well done

cheers

Luke, I just love this one! The composition works nicely here but I'd also like to see a tighter crop.

Luke, Nicely presented as is though I think I'd try Rich's comp suggestion and see how it looked. I like the directional light, the head turn and of course the branches with berries. Very nice.

I like the V shape in the comp. Pretty bird, and the thorns and berries draw my interest. :toast:

This one is very interesting. The composition is something that you indicated you like. I've looked at this several times. I fully understand the symmetry that is created with the thorny branches to create this composition. I'd be very curious to see other options with this shot. Just moving it up and down on my screen, one option is to crop from the top a bit above the two diagonal branches. For me it becomes stronger with less negative space at the top. It's really great to see the vision of others. Thanks for sharing this one.

Wonderful setting and composition to this. I do like the idea of a tighter crop to just above the branches but this version still works very well, way to go.

Great shot Luke. I am particularly encouraged by how sharp it is with the 1.7 TC. I've heard mixed reviews, but one is impressive. I love the 'V' formed by the branches. :toast:
