Hello All,
I found this beautiful bird in the Big Bend Ranch SP last summer.
There was almost 105° and I noticed him sleeping among the branches of a tree. After a couple of hours the temperature was lower and I saw him more active.

40D 700mm
f7,1 1/60
ISO 400
-0,33
tripod

Thanks for viewing.
C&C are very welcome.

Hi Monica: Beautiful Vermilion. Your patience certainly paid off. Love the background and the perch. I've always thought keeping details in brilliant reds with digital has been a challenge. (Seemed easier with film  ) Most of the reds here look great. I'm wondering if just a touch of de-saturating the reds in the top of the head an a touch less luminance would bring out more detail there. Congrats on a fine shot.

Thanks Keith. A fast fix on the crest. Is it better now?

A favorite bird for many of us. You've managed the exposure correctly her to keep the reds from blowing out as so often happens.

This looks to me to have a blue cast that should be easy to correct.

Apparently they are seen only in the very southern tip of the US and very uncommonly even there.

They are fairly common here in central and southern AZ.

A really good exposure on a tough subject Monica. Hard to tell if your work on the repost helped due to the small image size, but the original worked for me, so I guess it does not matter for me. Love the BG and simple comp. Very well done.

Very nice, Monica. You've managed the saturation of the reds very well in the re-post.

I've seen this species in the San Diego area, many areas of Arizona and along the Rio Grande valley in Texas.

The original is just great for me. Lovely colors. Nice and sharp. And a rare bird to boot. Good for you.

What a beauty Monica. Nice clean view and I like the feather textures you've captured.

I'm fine with both the original and the repost, Monica (I see barely any difference!). Seeing the end of the branch gives the image quite a three dimensional effect. Beautiful bird. :toast:

Beautiful bird. I can't find any flaws in this fine shot. I slightly prefer the repost because the red on the head is toned down a bit although I probably wouldn't have noticed if others hadn't mentioned it.

Fabulous. The detail and slight rim light make an almost 3D effect. Very nicely done and I like the slightly muted fg part of the branch.
