Yellowstone Bull

Moose aren't as common in Yellowstone as they used to be. Many speculate that the 1988 fires destroyed much of the habitat and food source (willows) they traditionally prefer. Typically there's better viewing down in the Tetons these days, so I was pleasantly surprised to come across this big fellow and his mate in a meadow early one morning up in the park's northeast corner. It's the largest bull I've seen in YNP in 12 years.

Wonderful shot Max! The COMP, DOF and look on his face are all excellent though a larger image sure would be nice. I feel the NE corner between Round Prairie and Cooke City is the best Moose viewing in Yellowstone. When we visit YNP we always spend 3-4 days in this area and never fail to see moose every morning though none as big as this guy. Congrats on being in the right place at the right time and knowing how to take advantage of the opportunity. Cheers!

Good shot, Max! He is a big fellow! Any chance that you got him at the eastern end of Lamar? Thanks for posting.

Jack, he was at the wide meadow below Baronette (not the "Baronette" pullout, but the lower meadow further west). As you guys know, that corner is the best place for moose in the park, but I never see bulls this big, typically cows, juveniles and calves.

Beautiful moose and excellent capture!
That head-turn and eye contact is excellent, as is the frost .

HI Max,

Great head-turn and love that eye. Everything works very well for me in this image but I am left wanting to see just a tad more detail in the neck and throat region.

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

I like this a lot Max. The head turn with good detail in that eye is really appealing and the OOF trees in the BG balance the composition nicely. Just a sliver more space all around would have been a slight improvement IMO, but that is minor. Moreover, I would try to tone down the bright grass a little to retrieve more detail there. :toast:

Great shot Max. I LOVE the look he is giving you . You might want to try darkening the grasses in a separate layer so the brightness doesn't detract from the moose.

Some good suggestions to consider above, but this is just fantastic Max. Wow, I love it. His rack is huge!

Hi Max,
I really like the eye contact and the composition overall. If I would change anything it would be to add a little more space around the subject. it just feels a little tight.

Thanks for sharing.

Excellent shot of this big fellow. I have been to Yellowstone many times and this is the best looking moose I have seen though I have seen a few in the Tetons that might rival him. I really like the kind of over the shoulder look he is giving you and I like the way the eye reads so well. I agree that it wouldn't hurt to tone down the grass a little.

Wouldn't change a thing Max, a great subject in a great setting. Yoy have nice detail on the eye, fur and antlers. I usually see cow moose around here, I will have to look harder for the bulls.

That head turn does it all. Terrific image of a moose. I like the small trees on the right, also. Adds enough to balance the image.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. With the grass I tried to make sure I didn't blow out any highlights, and on my monitor it looks fairly accurate (it was a chilly morning before sunrise, so a bit of frost probably contributed to the lightness of the grass). I may go back and try to play around with it a bit and maybe try to bring up some of the darker areas Brad mentioned to see what detail's available there.

As for the crop, I knew it was a fine line between just right and too tight. The main reason I tried to go a bit tighter here is because the dark trees in the upper left corner were distracting, and I wanted to leave them out as much as possible. Obviously I wasn't entirely successful, but I'm not the type to clone like mad either, so cropping was my only option.
